Welcome to 31 Days of Radical (transformative, far-reaching) Self Care. I’m glad you’re here and I’m delighted to be joining The Nester in her 31 Days of Change blog party.
We’re going to start off by talking about the Golden Rule so we can immediately set aside the notion that self care is selfish.
We all know The Golden Rule. All major religions have a version of it and it’s long been part of popular culture (perhaps needing a revival these days, no?).
Do you notice what’s assumed in all of those versions of The Golden Rule? Love of self. We tend to forget that part. There’s not even a need to command or make a rule about loving ourselves because it’s just implied in there.
But do we truly love ourselves and treat ourselves as we would have others treat us? Do you? In my life and in my coaching practice, I see all the time that we do not.
Even though it’s a cliche, we all know it’s true that you can’t give well what you don’t have in the first place–love, caring.
Self love and care is not narcissism. Narcissism, while associated with a type of high self esteem in studies, actually revolves around fear in my opinion. I see it as excessive preoccupation with the self not out of love but out of a false pride and a deep down fear of not measuring up.
The radical, transformative self care I’m talking about this month comes from the heart, is based in truth and leads to joy and delight. True self care is absolutely contagious in its ability to spread the love further and wider. Join me in finding out how you and I are worth it tomorrow!
